The Diesel RV Fueling Problem

If you tow with a diesel truck, you already know the routine. You need diesel, not gasoline. You need pumps that can handle a dually with a trailer attached. You need enough overhead clearance to avoid ripping off your AC unit or satellite dish. And you need all of this at a station you can actually navigate in and out of without performing a 17-point turn while a line of impatient cars stacks up behind you.

The fundamental problem is that most fuel stations in America were designed for passenger cars. The canopies are low, the islands are close together, the lanes are narrow, and the turning radius between the pumps and the parking lot assumes you are driving something 16 feet long, not 55. When you are towing a 35-foot fifth wheel behind a crew cab long bed dually, the geometry of a typical gas station simply does not work. You cannot pull in without swinging wide into oncoming traffic. You cannot line up at the pump without your trailer blocking two other lanes. And even if you manage to fuel up, you cannot pull forward without clipping the bollard or the curb or the car that just pulled in behind you.

Then there is the pump itself. A standard car-side diesel pump dispenses fuel at about 5 gallons per minute. If you are filling a 60-gallon tank from near empty, that is a 12-minute fill. Twelve minutes standing at a pump while your trailer blocks the only diesel island at a suburban gas station is an eternity. You can feel the stares. Meanwhile, the truck stop down the road has a high-flow pump that does the same fill in four minutes, with a pull-through lane wide enough that nobody has to wait behind you.

And if your truck requires DEF — diesel exhaust fluid — you have another variable to manage. Most modern diesel trucks built after 2010 use a SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system that requires DEF to meet emissions standards. Your truck will derate — dramatically reduce power — if the DEF tank runs dry. At a truck stop, DEF is dispensed from a dedicated nozzle right next to the diesel pump, typically at $3 to $4 per gallon. At a regular gas station, your only option is 2.5-gallon jugs from a shelf inside, priced at $12 to $15 per jug. That is roughly $5 to $6 per gallon for the same fluid. On a long trip where you burn through 10 or 15 gallons of DEF, the difference adds up fast.

The solution is knowing where to stop before you leave. Not every station along your route will work for your rig. The ones that do are predictable, identifiable, and worth planning around.

What Makes a Station "Truck-Friendly"

Pull-Through Diesel Islands

The single most important feature of a truck-friendly fuel station is pull-through access. A pull-through lane means you drive in one end, fuel up, and drive out the other end without ever putting your rig in reverse. When you are towing a long trailer, backing up at a fuel station is a recipe for disaster. You cannot see behind the trailer. Other vehicles are constantly pulling in and out around you. The margin between your trailer and the pump island is measured in inches, not feet.

Dedicated truck diesel islands are typically set apart from the car-side pumps. They have wider lane spacing — usually 12 to 14 feet between islands — which gives enough room for a dually truck with extended mirrors to pull through without folding anything in. The islands themselves are longer, accommodating truck-and-trailer combinations up to 75 feet. This is standard at major truck stops, but it is almost never available at a regular gas station or convenience store.

High-Flow Diesel Pumps

Truck diesel pumps dispense fuel at 10 to 15 gallons per minute, compared to 5 gallons per minute at a standard car-side pump. The difference is significant when you are filling a large tank. A 60-gallon fill takes roughly 4 minutes at a high-flow pump. The same fill at a car-speed pump takes 12 minutes. Over the course of a multi-week trip with fuel stops every 200 miles, those extra 8 minutes per stop add up to hours of wasted time standing at a pump.

High-flow pumps also use a larger nozzle diameter. The truck-side diesel nozzle is physically bigger than the car-side nozzle, which is one reason why the flow rate is higher. Some stations with both truck and car diesel use different pricing for each — truck diesel is sometimes a few cents cheaper per gallon because the volume is higher and the margins are thinner. Not always, but often enough to be worth checking.

Adequate Clearance and Turning Space

Canopy height is a silent hazard that catches RV drivers off guard. Many suburban gas stations have canopies as low as 11 feet 6 inches. A diesel truck with a camper shell or a tall RV can easily exceed 12 or 13 feet. Hitting a canopy at 5 miles per hour will not kill anyone, but it will destroy your air conditioner, your satellite dish, and possibly the canopy itself. The repair bill and the insurance claim are not how you want to spend your Tuesday.

Most truck stops either have canopies set at 15 feet or higher, or they have no canopy at all over the truck diesel islands. This is by design — they are built to accommodate semi trucks with 13-foot-6-inch trailers, so anything you are towing will fit.

Turning space matters as much as clearance. Can you get into the fuel lane from the road without running over a curb? Can you exit the fuel lane and reach the road without cutting through the parking lot at an impossible angle? Pull-through is king, but even pull-through lanes need adequate entrance and exit geometry. Some smaller truck stops have pull-through pumps but tight entrances that make them impractical for longer trailer combinations.

DEF Availability

If your truck runs DEF, plan your stops around stations that have DEF dispensers at the pump. Filling your DEF tank from the pump takes 30 seconds and costs a fraction of what you will pay for jugs inside. At current prices, DEF at the pump runs about $3 per gallon. The 2.5-gallon jugs sold at gas stations and auto parts stores cost $12 to $15 per jug, which works out to $5 to $6 per gallon. On a trip where you need 10 gallons of DEF, that is $30 at the pump versus $50 to $60 in jugs.

Beyond cost, the convenience factor is enormous. Pouring DEF from jugs is messy. The bottles are awkward, the spouts are poorly designed, and DEF crystallizes into a white residue that gets on everything it touches. At the pump, you just insert the nozzle and squeeze the handle, exactly like filling your fuel tank.

Pro tip: Love's, Pilot/Flying J, and TA/Petro are reliably truck-friendly with DEF at the pump. But not every location has pull-through access — check before you pull in.

Top Truck Stop Chains for RVs

Love's Travel Stops

Love's operates over 600 locations across 42 states, and most of them have dedicated truck diesel islands with pull-through access. Facilities are generally clean and well-maintained, which matters when you are stopping multiple times a week for months at a time. Love's tends to build locations with generous lot layouts that make entering and exiting straightforward even with a long trailer.

The Love's Connect app is genuinely useful for trip planning. It shows real-time fuel prices at each location, lists available amenities, and indicates whether the truck diesel lanes are on the same side of the building as the car pumps or separated. You can filter by amenities to find locations with showers, laundry, and dump stations — all of which matter on a long RV trip.

Pilot/Flying J

Pilot and Flying J combined form the largest truck stop network in the country with over 750 locations. Most have pull-through diesel with high-flow pumps and DEF at the island. The sheer number of locations means that on most major interstate routes, you are rarely more than 100 miles from a Pilot or Flying J, which makes them a reliable backbone for fuel planning.

The PilotFlyingJ app shows fuel prices, diesel lane availability, and amenities for each location. One thing to note: not all Pilot locations are full-size truck stops. Some are smaller convenience stores with limited diesel access. The app distinguishes between them, so check before you commit to a stop.

TA/Petro

TravelCenters of America (TA) and Petro Stopping Centers are full-service truck stops that often include on-site repair shops, sit-down restaurants, and large parking areas. They tend to be bigger than the average Love's or Pilot, with more room to maneuver. For RVers towing large trailers, the extra space is a meaningful advantage.

TA and Petro locations are less common than Love's or Pilot — there are roughly 280 locations combined — but they are often less crowded as a result. If you have the choice between a packed Pilot at a busy interchange and a TA five miles down the road with half the traffic, the TA is usually the better experience.

Buc-ee's

Buc-ee's is a phenomenon. The facilities are massive — some locations have over 100 fuel pumps — and the restrooms are famously clean. They are expanding aggressively from their Texas base into the Southeast and beyond. But Buc-ee's has a significant limitation for RV travelers: the stations are designed primarily for passenger cars. The pump layout is dense, the traffic flow assumes vehicles under 20 feet, and the sheer volume of cars creates congestion that makes maneuvering a truck-and-trailer combination stressful.

If you are driving your truck without the trailer, Buc-ee's is a perfectly fine fuel stop and the snack selection alone is worth the detour. But if you are towing a long trailer, think carefully before pulling in. Some locations have dedicated RV or truck fuel lanes, but many do not. The car traffic alone can make it difficult to navigate through the lot without a spotter. Buc-ee's is great for a planned stop where you unhitch and leave the trailer at camp. It is not ideal for a mid-route fuel stop while towing.

Fuel Desert Awareness

What Is a Fuel Desert?

A fuel desert is a stretch of highway where fuel stations are spaced far enough apart that your rig's range becomes a genuine concern. For a diesel truck towing a large trailer at 7 to 10 miles per gallon, any gap of 75 miles or more between reliable diesel stations deserves attention. A gap of 100 miles or more demands advance planning. When your total range while towing is only 200 to 300 miles, a 120-mile gap with no fuel is eating up 40% to 60% of your tank in a single stretch.

Fuel deserts are not theoretical. They exist on major highways that RV travelers use every day, and they catch people off guard because the East Coast and Midwest have conditioned most drivers to expect a fuel station every 10 to 20 miles. Once you cross into the western states, that assumption can get you stranded.

Common Fuel Desert Corridors

Several well-traveled routes have stretches that demand advance fuel planning:

  • Nevada — I-80 and US-93: The stretches between small towns can exceed 100 miles with no services. US-93 between Las Vegas and Ely is especially sparse. The desert heat compounds the problem — if you run out of fuel here in July, you are sitting in 110-degree heat waiting for help.
  • Utah — I-70 through the San Rafael Swell: The 110-mile stretch between Green River and Salina has almost nothing. It is also some of the most beautiful driving in the country, which makes it worse — you want to take your time, but your fuel gauge says otherwise.
  • West Texas — I-10 between Fort Stockton and Van Horn: 120 miles of open desert with minimal services. The wind here can also be brutal, which increases fuel consumption beyond what you might expect from flat terrain.
  • Montana — US-2 in the Hi-Line region: The small towns along the northern tier are spaced far apart, and not every town has a diesel station that is open after hours or on weekends.
  • Oregon — US-20 through the high desert: Between Bend and Burns, services are scarce and the terrain is deceptively hilly, which eats into your fuel economy.

How to Plan Around Them

The math is straightforward. Take your tank capacity, multiply by your towing MPG, and multiply by 0.75. That is your safe range — the distance you can travel before you need to start looking for fuel. If a gap on your route exceeds that number, you must fill up at the last available station before entering the gap, regardless of how much fuel you have left.

For example: a 36-gallon tank at 8 MPG gives you a theoretical range of 288 miles. Seventy-five percent of that is 216 miles. If you are about to enter a 120-mile stretch with no fuel, and your tank is at half, you have roughly 144 miles of range. That is enough to make it, but barely — and it leaves no margin for headwinds, detours, or the possibility that the next station after the gap is closed. Fill up.

Some RVers carry a supplemental fuel container for emergencies. If you do this, use a container rated for diesel fuel, secure it properly in the truck bed or on a carrier, and check local fire codes — some campgrounds and RV parks prohibit external fuel storage. A 5-gallon supplemental container adds roughly 40 miles of range, which can be the difference between reaching a station and calling for roadside assistance.

Fuel Price Apps and Loyalty Programs

Diesel prices can vary by 30 to 50 cents per gallon within a single metro area, and the variance is even wider in rural areas where stations have less competition. On a 60-gallon fill, a 30-cent difference is $18. Over a month-long trip with 15 fuel stops, that is $270 — real money that adds up quietly.

GasBuddy is the most widely used fuel price app and it covers both car and truck fuel pricing. Mudflap is specifically designed for truckers and often shows discounted diesel prices at independent truck stops that are not listed on other apps. Both are free to use and worth having on your phone.

Loyalty programs at the major chains offer consistent savings. Love's My Love Rewards and Pilot's myRewards Plus both offer 5 to 10 cents off per gallon after accumulating points. The savings are automatic once you enroll — you just use your loyalty number at the pump. Over the course of a year of RV travel, the accumulated savings easily cover the cost of a night or two of camping.

For more aggressive savings, fuel cards like TSD Logistics and NASTC offer commercial-level diesel pricing to RV owners. These cards charge a small membership fee but provide access to negotiated truck diesel prices that are typically 10 to 20 cents below retail. Filling Strategy

The most expensive fuel is the fuel you buy in a panic. When you let your tank drop to a quarter and the next decent station is 80 miles away, you end up stopping at whatever is available — a remote station with premium pricing, a tourist-area station near a national park entrance charging 50 cents above market, or a small-town station with a single low-flow diesel pump and a line of three trucks ahead of you.

The better approach is to fill up proactively at stations with competitive pricing, even if your tank is still half full. Truck stops near major interstate junctions tend to have the lowest prices because they compete directly with each other for the high-volume truck traffic. Stations in tourist areas, remote locations, and near state borders (where tax differences create pricing distortions) tend to be the most expensive.

If you know your route and your planned stops in advance, you can identify the cheapest fuel along the way and time your fills accordingly. This is one of those areas where 15 minutes of planning before departure saves meaningful money over the course of a trip.

Tracking Fuel Economy Over Time

Every fuel stop is a data point. If you log the date, odometer reading, gallons filled, price per gallon, and location for every fill-up, you build a picture of your rig's actual fuel economy under real-world conditions. This data is more than a curiosity — it is a diagnostic tool.

Consistent fuel economy over time means your engine and drivetrain are healthy. A gradual decline in MPG over weeks or months can signal developing maintenance issues: low tire pressure, a clogged air filter, a failing turbocharger, injector problems, or a DPF (diesel particulate filter) that needs regeneration or cleaning. Catching these trends early through fuel economy tracking can prevent expensive breakdowns on the road.

Even short-term variations are informative. If your MPG drops noticeably on a particular stretch of road, it probably means you were fighting a headwind or climbing more elevation than the map suggested. If it improves, you had a tailwind or favorable terrain. Over time, you develop an intuitive sense of what your rig should be getting under various conditions, and anything outside that range becomes a signal worth investigating.
